WORLDWIDE UTE NEWS Club FAQ - 7 January 2001
|
General Questions
- Q: What is WUN?
A: WUN is the Worldwide UTE News Club. The club is centered around
the exchange of news and information relating to "utility", or ute,
stations and signals below 30 Mhz. If it's below 30 Mhz and it's not
a broadcast station like the BBC or VOA, then it probably applies to
the WUN!

- Q: What is the address for the WUN www server?
A: World Wide Web (www) server is available on the internet for
information and news about the Worldwide UTE News Club. To access the
www server, use your favorite web browser and access the URL:
http://www.wunclub.com/
This will put you on the WUN home page. Besides the WUN bulletin (current
and back issues), the WUN www site contains many other useful links to
utility information files, special topic reports and other www sites.
Send e-mail relating to this server to .
webmaster@wunclub.com
Back to Contents
- Q: I don't have www access. Is there an anonymous ftp site?
A: No. Unfortunately there is no anonymous ftp site available. The
only way you can retrieve back issues of the newsletter is through the
WUN www page.
Back to Contents
- Q: I can't seem to connect to a www site...
A: Problems with the www pages or the listserver should be reported to those
staff members.
- WUN www page:
- webmaster@wunclub.com
- WUN Listserver:
- listmaster@wunclub.com
Back to Contents
- Q: I just signed on, can I get back issues of the WUN Newsletters?
A: Yes, at the WUN www site. There are many helpful files, articles and all
past newsletter issues or WUN Special Reports.
Back to Contents
- Q: When is the newsletter posted to the web site?
A: On or about the first day of each month.
Back to Contents
- Q: How can I contribute information or logs?
A: Send the information to the editor for the area you wish to contribute
listed on the WUN Staff page. Logs can also
be posted directly to the listserver (wun@mailman.qth.net), or via the
On-line Logs page.
Back to Contents
- Q: Can I just post logs on WUN to be used in the newsletter?
A: Yes, the Logs Column Editor or one of his/her assistants collects
these as well. However, to help the Logs Column Editor out, try to stick
as close as possible to the format used in the WUN Logs column:
FREQ CALLSIGN: STATION TIME MODE (baud) REMARKS (Date) (INITIALS)
12502.5 LXRC: M/V Biggaship 1552 ARQ w/tlx for ETA. (1/Sep/1998) (RB)
11175 WUN 52: 1610 USB wkg Offutt w/pp to WUN Command Post. (10/Oct/1998) (RB)
Those who run reports once a week or month can send the logs direct to
Electronic Editor for use in the newsletter. You can also post your logs via the
On-line Logs page.
Back to Contents
- Q: That reminds me, why so many abbreviations in the logs?
A: Abbreviations are used to save time and file size. Most have been commonly
used by clubs or publications for years. The list of abbreviations can be found on
the WUN www site at http://www.wunclub.com/files/abbrev.html.
Please try to make use of these abbreviations to save editing time.
Back to Contents
- Q: What is the deadline for sending information or logs?
A: The deadline for logs and info to the editors is the 10th of each month.
Back to Contents
- Q: I have a complaint/problem/suggestion, who can help me?
A: Contact the webmaster and your email
will be forwarded to the appropriate
staff member that can help. Do not post complaints, problems, or
suggestions over the WUN listserver.
Back to Contents
- Q: I'm having a problem that isn't listed above. What should I do?
A: DO NOT post the question to the entire list! Send e-mail to
webmaster@wunclub.com for assistance or the
proper staff member if known.

- Q: What's an EAM?
A: EAM = Emergency Action Message. From Strategic Command, Control,
and Communication - Alternative Approaches For Modernization; John J.
Hare, Richard H. Davison, and Peter Tarpgaars; Congressional Budget Office
(CBO); October 1981; Page 44:
"EAM: Though generally referring to a category of urgent messages from
commanders to deployed forces, EAM is often used as a short-hand
expression for a specially coded nuclear attack directive."
What are they? Park your receiver on 11175.0 during the day, and
6739.0/8992.0 during the evenings. Eventually you'll hear the GHFS
stations broadcast an EAM - a six-character alpha-numeric string, repeated
three times, followed by the 6-character string and anywhere from 6/20/26
characters to strings that can number in the hundreds of characters. This
activity is daily, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, year after year. (A
second group of EAMs are the so-called FOXTROT broadcasts - SKYKING,
SKYKING do not answer. "trigraph"; minutestamp; 2-character authenticator.
These are said to be *only* for ACC/AMC airborne forces detailed to the
U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM)).
Further info from Jeff Haverlah can be found on the WUN www site, including
other sites with excellent information about these broadcasts.

- Q: How do you become a member of the WUN Staff? Does the staff get
paid? Who selects the members?
A: The WUN Staff is made up of volunteers who donate their time to
the club. The Staff is made up of the Newsletter Editors, Column
Editors, the President, the Web Site Administrator, the Listserver
Administrator, the Membership Director, and the Secretary/Treasurer.
New members of the staff are selected to replace members that resign
their position.

Listserver Questions
- Q: This may be a bit off topic, but...
A: As per the WUN Charter section 4c, please
refrain from posting messages not related to the topic stated in the
main purpose statement for the club, that is:
"... to further the exchange of information concerning
the hobby of monitoring "utility" radio transmissions and stations that
appear in the radio spectrum below 30 MHz.
This includes "virus warnings", messages on topics covered on other
lists or newsgroups, flames, spam, or other off-topic subjects. Basically,
if you are starting your message with "I know this is off-topic, but...",
then the message is probably not appropriate for the WUN list. Anyone
who cannot abide by this rule will be unsubscribed.
Back to Contents
- Q: Is mail from the WUN list available in digest form?
A: Yes. Using the listserver web interface you can subscribe to the digest version
of the list. See: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/wun
for more information.
Back to Contents
- Q: Someone asked a question that I know the answer to. Should I just send the answer to the person asking or to the entire list?
A: If the question has wide enough appeal that the answer would be of interest
to all, then by all means post the reply back to the list, otherwise respond
directly to the original poster. Note that the list is set up to reply back
to the poster and you must change it to post to the list.
Back to Contents
- Q: I have a large list of callsigns that I would like to post. Should I use uuencode, binhex, mime, etc? Should I send these as an attachment?
A: No, since not everyone makes use of these programs, it is best to
send a message offering the file in these formats and invite those
interested to send you mail. DO NOT SEND ANY FILE AS AN ATTACHMENT
ACROSS THE WUN SERVER. It is simply not allowed and will be rejected
by the listserver anyway. Also, please refrain from including large files in the
body of your message. Anyone who cannot abide by this rule will be unsubscribed.
Back to Contents
- Q: I want to thank someone for answering a question I posted. Should I send it to the whole WUN list?
A: No, send your message directly to the author/sender of the article or post.
If 7 people answer your question, thank those 7 people, not the total 1000+
folks on the list.
Back to Contents
- Q: Are there any other Listserver rules I should know about?
A: Besides what has already been covered in the WUN FAQ, here are
some rules specific to listserver usage:
- Do not send spam e-mail messages to mailing lists
- Do not post commercial messages of any type
- Do not cross-post messages to multiple mailing lists, especially multiple
QTH.Net lists.
- Do not include long signatures in your e-mail message. 5-7 lines
is acceptable, more than that may be excessive and is very poor netequette.
- Please refrain from posting "Ebay" type auction notices
- Before going on vacation, unsubscribe from WUN to prevent your mailbox
from filling up and causing an unnecessary burden on the QTH.Net server.
- No Flames or Personal Attacks
Anyone who cannot abide by this rule will be unsubscribed.

- Q: Listserver Posting Codes?
A: We see comments about the wide variety of subjects available
on the WUN List. Some people have stated that they feel they have to
sort through too many "uninteresting" or "unwanted" messages in order
to find the few emails of interest. We have a procedure setup by Ary
Boender to solve this problem.
It is very simple really, just begin your subject line with a code.
Many mail programs can automatically store messages in folders and it
would be handy when a WUN post with a specific contents drops in the
folder that you created for that subject. In addition, some email
programs allow you to download ONLY the topics that interest you. If
most of us would use these codes, it would make using the list more
efficient for each individual user.
We request that you use a code that corresponds with the various
columns and log sections in the newsletter:
- AERO (civil aeronautical stations)
- ALERT (to allow forwarding of time-sensitive materials to those
with email pagers - please keep the size and signatures to the minimum
size necessary to convey the meaning of the post)
- DIG (for Digital modes, including also maritime, aero, and military digital stations)
- MAR (maritime stations)
- MIL (military stations)
- MISC (miscellaneous, all other stations that don't fit elsewhere)
So, how should it be used? An example:
To: wun@mailman.qth.net
Subject: MIL: Unid military stations
From: ary@luna.net (Ary Boender)
Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 22:11:27 GMT
The subject code indicates that the contents of this message is about
military stations. Your mail program will drop the incoming MIL post
automatically in your MILitary folder. It is of course possible that
you post a message with items that cover more than one field. Use in
that case use 'MISC' for 'miscellaneous items'.

- Q: Why can't I post my messages using HTML format? After all, if my mailer supports it, why don't you? It is the 'wave of the future'.
A: We don't allow html mail posting for several reasons:
- Not all email programs support the use of html mail, and we desire
that everyone be able to read all of the mail posted to the group.
- While in America and some other countries we get "unlimited"
internet access for our monthly fee, in other countries the user must
pay for either the time or size of their email downloads. The use of
html-based email greatly increases the size of the email file itself,
and thus costs more money to download for these users. In order to
avoid a severe financial hardship for some of our members, we do not
allow the use of html-based email in order to keep the messages as
compact as possible.
- Our listserver hosting service - qth.net, does not allow html
posting on any of it's lists.
Anyone who cannot abide by this rule will be unsubscribed.
Back to Contents
- Q: I posted a message to the server but it didn't show up on the list...
A: Our listserver host, qth.net, has rules in place to prevent spam and
other inappropriate messages from appearing on mailing lists. Some of the rules include:
- Posting to the list from a non-subscribed address
- Posting messages containing attachments and/or HTML
- Posting messages containing certain keywords in the subject or body that are also
listserver commands, such as "help" or "subscribe"
Messages not following these rules are automatically rejected by the listserver.
Back to Contents
- Q: I'm having a problem posting to the list...I get an odd reply back when I post... I have a question about e-mail to the list... I have a question about the list.
A: Contact the list administrator at
listmaster@wunclub.com. DO NOT POST THESE PROBLEMS TO THE LIST OR CONTACT
ANYONE AT QTH.net. Only the list administrator can help. It is very poor
netequette to post a problem over the WUN listserver to all members, or to bother
the folks at QTH. Anyone who cannot abide by this rule will be unsubscribed.
Back to Contents
- Q: Please unsubscribe me...I'm having trouble unsubscribing to go on vacation...
A: Unless there is some dire problem, YOU must unsubscribe and from the
address you used to subscribe. Please check all the info and make sure it is
correct. Use the listserver web interface located at:
http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/wun
to unsubscribe or change your subscription information.
When switching ISPs, remember to unsubscribe from your old account before it is deactivated.
Back to Contents
- Q: How long will you let my messages bounce before unsubscribing
me? What if my ISP goes down for a few hours?
A: Because of the volume of mail the list maintenance generates, we have set
a policy on how long mail errors occur before we unsubscribe an address. For
"user unknown" errors, we will let those occur for 48 hours before we assume the
account is really gone/disabled. For "quota exceeded" or other delivery errors,
we let those run for 72 hours before we unsubscribe the account. The WUN lists
can generate lots of mail, so we suggest that you subscribe from an ISP that does
not have limited quotas on email storage. Examples not to use are YAHOO, HOTMAIL,
or JUNO, which have relatively small email quotas. Alternatively, you can
subscribe to the list in digest format, which reduces the volume of messages to some extent.

- Q: Is WUN a moderated list? What are the WUN policies regarding
Flame attacks, Quoting Person-Person Email, etc...
A: WUN is not a true moderated list. However, the list is monitored
by the Listserver Administrator, the WUN Staff, and by the membership at large.
Members violating any of the rules will be asked to cease their activities.
Anyone continuing their actions will be unsubscribed. Some of our more
important Listserver policies are:
- Flame attacks or personal attacks against other members of the club will
not be tolerated. BLATANT VIOLATORS WILL BE UNSUBSCRIBED WITHOUT WARNING.
Minor violators will be warned. If the Flame attacks continue, the member
will then be unsubscribed.
- Quoting to the entire list from an email sent to you personally is not
only bad netiquette, it is illegal in many locales. If someone sends you a
personal email that you wish to quote to the list, get their permission first.
Violators will be warned. Repeat offenders will be unsubscribed.
- WUN is a club which has members from all continents, from all ethnic and
cultural backgrounds, from all religious groups, and of all political
persuasions. Insulting/derogatory comments about any of these groups are not
tolerated. In addition, profanity will not be tolerated. Violators will be
warned. Repeat offenders will be unsubscribed.
